Guy Johnson is the only son of Marguerite Ann Johnson, better known as author, poet and human right activist Dr. Maya Angelou –one of the most influential voices of our time. We are sadden to hear the news of his mother’s death, many reports are paying tribute to her outstanding legacy; from Sesame Street to the White House, his mother’s story awed millions.
Johnson’s mother was 86, and her death was confirmed by a family representative and by officials at the Winston-Salem mayor’s office in North Carolina, where she had been living.
A statement from Dr. Maya Angelou’s Family was posted to her Facebook account a few hours ago, it reads
Dr. Maya Angelou passed quietly in her home before 8:00 a.m. EST. Her family is extremely grateful that her ascension was not belabored by a loss of acuity or comprehension. She lived a life as a teacher, activist, artist and human being. She was a warrior for equality, tolerance and peace. The family is extremely appreciative of the time we had with her and we know that she is looking down upon us with love.

Just like his mother had said to him, Johnson did recover and he was able to walk out of the hospital.
