Before getting WeWork started, Neumann founded Krawlers the kid’s clothing company with knee pads, around that time he met Miguel McKelvey thru a mutual friend at a party.

In 2008, McKelvey and Newmann talked their landlord Joshua Guttman into allowing them to divide floors of a building that was empty and turned it into a semi-communal offices, that was the start of Green Desk, McKelvey was responsible for the designed of the website, logo, and the name.

Adam Neumann later sold Green Desk to Guttman, Adam and Miguel used the money from Green Desk in addition to $15 million they got from Joel Schreiber a Brooklyn real estate developer to create WeWork along with his wife and Miguel in 2010.

Adam Neumann stepped down from his CEO position at WeW in September 2019, although continued serving as non-executive chairman of the board, some said the reason was numerous reports of his drug use and desire to become Israel Prime Minister.

According to WSJ, the Japanese investor SoftBank was who encourage (more like enforced) Neumann into stepping down, the move would allow him to stay at the company he built into one of the country’s most valuable startups, but inject fresh leadership to pursue an IPO that would bring We the cash it needs to keep up its torrid growth.”

It was reported SoftBank wold give Neumann $1.7 billion to leave WeWork as most of his stocks. The reason behind these offering that many questioned from SoftBank who would also pay Neumann $500 million for the loans to JP Morgan Chase and $185 million in consulting fees is that SoftBank saw Neumannbasa liability for WeWork, whose valuation dropped from $46 billion to $8 billion in two months.

“He basically said, ‘This is what I need in order to leave,’ and they’re finding different ways to categorize that payment,” Nell Minow, vice chair of ValueEdge Advisors, a corporate governance consulting firm, told Recode. “The question now to me is, ‘What is SoftBank thinking?’ It’s hard to imagine that throwing any additional money into this mess is good for their investors.”

“They’re trying to make it attractive for him to leave the company,” Council of Institutional Investors deputy director Amy Borrus told Recode. “When the founder-CEO has voting control, sometimes you have to bend over backwards.”

In November 2019, Neumann along with other WeWork officials were sued by minority shareholders over a mishandled IPO and breaching fiduciary duties to them (minority shareholders).

In February 2020, WeWork Executive Chairman Marcelo Claure said Adam Neumann was not getting the $1.7 Billion as initially reported.

“To say that he has walked away with over a billion dollars is totally false,” said Claure, SoftBank executive and executive chairman of Sprint, in an interview with Andrew Ross Sorkin.
