Robert Engle

Robert Engle is the young man who confronted and stopped a masked gunman who opened fire at the Burnette Chapel Church of Christ in Antioch.



On Sunday, the suspect, Emanuel Samson entered the church and opened fire killing at least one person and injuring seven others. But Robert Engle –a 22-year-old Usher –had to do something and physically engaged him preventing him from causing further damage.

During the confrontation, the shooter hit Robert Engle several times on his head and ended up shooting himself on the chest. Engel who was bleeding from his head, then ran outside to his car to get his gun and held the shooter at gunpoint until the police arrived at the scene.

Engle was then taken to the hospital to treat his injuries.

Police Chief Steve Anderson said of Robert Engle’s brave actions “He’s the hero” “He’s the person who stopped this madness.”

The Tennessean said Robert’s grandmother Rheta Engle, was extremely proud of him saying “That’s like him. He’s just someone who cares about a lot of people. He has all their feelings at heart,” “It would make any parent, grandparent very, very proud of him.”

Mr. Engle was born February 22, 1995; he is originally from La Vergne, Tennessee and currently resides in Mount Juliet.

Robert Engle, who goes by his middle name Caleb, seems to be a Macbeth and an Ozzy Osborne fan; on his Facebook profile he has a quote by the Black Sabbath singer, that reads “Lay your world on me, I can take the weight.” –

According to other social media info, Robert Engle used to work at Tennessee Mechanical Corporation and he also worked at Yates Services at Nissan Smyrna. The former Warehouse Worker currently works at Comfort Supply Inc.

He and his girlfriend, Bailey Inman, have been in a relationship since July 2016.

In a statement put out after the shooting, Engel said: “I’ve been going to this church my whole life since I was a small child. I would have never, ever thought something like this would have happened.”

He also asked for prayers for the victims and prayers for the shooter and the shooter’s family.
