Is a cruel reality to face the death sentence of a child. That’s what Cassandra Fortin’s mother have to deal with.
Cassandra who is a 17-year-old girl suffering from Hodgkins Lymphoma, and is currently fighting the state for her right to refuse treatment.
Cassandra is making headlines not only because she intends to refuse treatment but also because her case tests a core issue of civil rights and modern medicine: At what age do we have legal control of our bodies? Reports say.
According to Cassandra’s mother Jackie –who fully supports her daughter’s decision –she was diagnosed last September and her behavior made child protection take custody of her in December. The Connecticut native who actually went as far as running away from her mother’s home, is currently being held at Children’s Medical Center (CCMC) in Hartford.
According to her mother her daughter is very bright and said during an interview her daughter will come around and say ‘Mom, I am ready to do chemo.’ But would rather her daughter’s rights be respected right now.
Cassandra has told her doctors she doesn’t want any poison on her body.
