85-year-old Mercedes Barcha Pardo; the daughter of a well-known pharmacist met the famous Novelist while she was still in high school, Gabo remembered that Mercedes had just finished primary school when he met her at a party. Drunk but clearly captivated by her looks, he proposed to her; once sober he still recalled his bold move on that young, but an exotic creature.
Mercedes was studying in Medellin and Gabriel lived in Barranquilla, where she spend the Holidays. They were madly in love and couldn’t wait to spend the rest of their lives together; however, Mercedes was committed to finishing her high school studies before getting married.
But Barcha Pardo did not walk the aisle after graduation; because by that time, Gabriel who was working as a journalist was sent to Europe. They finally got married in the Barranquilla church named Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro, on March 21st, 1958.
Mercedes comes from an Egyptian family, her big brown eyes, high cheekbones, and lustrous brown shoulder-length hair were legendary. She gave birth to their first son Rodrigo in 1959, and to her youngest son Gonzalo three year later.
Rodrigo Garcia Marquez is today a filmmaker while Gonzalo is a graphic designer in Mexico.
