29-year-old Edward Snowden, known as the “Whistleblower”, is an ex-CIA employee involved in leaking classified material on top-secret National Security Agency (NSA) programs including the PRISM surveillance program to The Guardian and The Washington Post in June 2013. Reportedly, he said he had gone to Hong Kong because of its “strong tradition of free speech”.
Snowden said he had an “obligation to help free people from oppression”. He told the Guardian:
“The NSA has built an infrastructure that allows it to intercept almost everything. With this capability, the vast majority of human communications are automatically ingested without targeting. If I wanted to see your emails or your wife’s phone, all I have to do is use intercepts. I can get your emails, passwords, phone records, credit cards.”
“I don’t want to live in a society that does these sort of things… I do not want to live in a world where everything I do and say is recorded. That is not something I am willing to support or live under.”
Edward Snowden lived with his girlfriend in a rented corner house in Waipahu, a former sugar plantation area west of Honolulu. The house is close to a golf course and Snowden’s job at the offices of consulting giant Booz Allen Hamilton were 30 miles away.

The couple moved out of the home on May 1st and it is currently empty. Estate agent Kerri Jo Heim, who is handling the property, said the couple had left at the request of the owner because he wanted to sell it.
One of their neighbors told The Daily Telegraph:
“They were here about four months and he didn’t come out much. He had a lot of boxes in his garage which blocked it off and there was just a little gap to walk through. His girlfriend was, I’d say, in her 20s with blonde hair.”
