Indie singer Jason Molina, best known for his work fronting the bands Songs:Ohia and Magnolia Electric Co, has died on Saturday at age 39 from alcohol abuse-related organ failure. He had been suffering health problems for a while. His family and the label Secretly Canadian set up the “Jason Molina Medical Fund” to support him. In May 2012, Molina told fans:

“Treatment is good, getting to deal with a lot of things that even the music didn’t want to. I have not given up because you, my friends, have not given up on me. I do still need your support however that takes shape, good vibes are worth more than you might think.”

Jason Molina was married to 35-year-old Darcie Schoenman Molina from Pittsburgh. She is also known as Darcie Lynn Schoenman and Darcie Molina. She graduated from Indiana Bloomington University in 1999, and from Mt. Lebanon High School in 1995. The couple lived in Indianapolis, IN.

Molina stopped touring in 2009 due to health reasons but continued to write music until his death.

“Jason was a world-class musician, songwriter and recording artist. He was also a beloved friend…We’re going to miss Jason. He was generous. He was a one of a kind. And he had a voice unlike any other,” said a rep from Record label Secretly Canadian.

god rest his soul… one of the best songwriters of all time.. too much he did not get the recognition he deserved.. Songs:Ohia’s album Lioness is the best album of all times for me..

rest in peace troubled/sensitive/beautiful soul Jason..

  3. Hi, I am Jason’s cousin, Joey. I have learned that his family is in need of financial help and for this reason I have created a promo code of, “Jason” without the quotes at my store http://www.joeyswarehouse.com. Anyone who uses the code Jason from now through 04/30/13 will receive a 5% discount and his sister Ashley will receive 10% of the entire sale to help pay for Jason’s medical bills and funeral. This is just an FYI only, I just felt like I needed to do something to help the family.

  4. I object to this whole article. Jason Molina was not a celebrity in any traditional sense, and his wife does not need to be subjected to scrutiny at what is surely a hard time for her (being that they were reportedly estranged, I imagine I’d have a lot of complicated emotions to deal with right now). I don’t intend to speak for her, but she hasn’t done so herself, and I take that to mean she wants to be left out of this.

  5. But I do hope, as Jason’s cousin suggests above, that people contribute to the memorial fund. Every time I get paid, I contribute $25. I know it’s not a lot, but it’s something. If I can do it – and I’m doing it in part because I have my own insane lack-of-medical-insurance expenses – so can you.
