Rick Hutzell is the man behind Capital Gazette –the daily newspaper of Annapolis and central and southern Anne Arundel County; publishing in Annapolis, Maryland and part of Baltimore Sun Media Group and Tribune Publishing.



Rick Hutzell is one of the Capital Gazette’s journalists who survived a fatal shooting that took place inside the newspaper building today. At least four people are dead and the shooter is in custody.

According to a profile of the veteran columnist, he oversees the editorial staff of The Capital, the Maryland Gazette, the Crofton West County Gazette and the Bowie Blade-News. He’s been covering Annapolis and Anne Arundel County for 30 years. Rick began his newspaper career in his hometown, Ocean City, Maryland.

According to his LinkedIn, he graduated from the University of Virginia at Wise in 1980 and earned a master’s degree in communication sciences from the University of Tennessee in 1983. He joined The Capital in the late 80’s and was hired as an assistant city editor, later becoming a business editor.

In 2006, he was named editor of the Maryland Gazette, and joined the company’s editorial board in 2013. He was promoted to editor two years later in 2015 and previously served assistant editor of Capital Gazette Communications, overseeing the weekly papers and government reporting.

Hutzell also calls himself a ‘husband, father, cook, amateur lawn mower and dog lover.’

He is married to wife, Chara Hutzell and together they are the proud parents of two adult children, a son Evan; and a daughter, Lily. Mrs. Hutzell is a sales manager at Loews Annapolis Hotel.

Lily Hutzell studied World history at the University of Kentucky and is a manager at Woodland Aquatic Facility. Evan graduated from Annapolis Senior High in 2016 and goes to University of Maryland.
