#1 Long is a former Marine

Long, was born March 27, 1990 –the 28-year-old was a veteran in the Marine Corps who served in Afghanistan.

#2 He was known to the law

Ian Long had previous encounters with local police. Last April police was called to his home, when deputies found him acting irate and irrationally. The sheriff said a mental health crisis team was called at that time and concluded that Long did not need to be taken into custody.

The other prior encounters were a traffic accident and an incident when he was the victim of a battery at a different bar.

#3 He is among the deceased

He was found dead inside the Borderline Bar & Grill when a SWAT team and officers entered. Dean said Long may have killed himself, but that police were still investigating.

#4 The bar is a popular hangout for students

Borderline Grill & Bar is a popular place for students to meet in Thousand Oaks. The bar was hosting the weekly “College Country Night” when the gunfire broke out and at least 200 students where there.

#5 He covered his face

Witnesses told local TV stations that the gunman was tall and wearing all black with a hood and his face partly covered.

Police do not believe Ian Long targeted any employees at the bar specifically. He first fired on a person working the door, then appeared to shoot at random at people inside.

Long allegedly a Glock 21 .45-calibre handgun with an extended magazine to shoot at people. According to an eye witness the gunman was also “throwing smoke grenades” as he repeatedly fired shots inside the bar.

At least a dozen people were killed – including Ron Helus –a “hero” cop who was due to retire next year and died bravely trying to save others’ lives.

The shooter who is said to have been heavily covered in tattoos lives with this mother and is said to have used her car to drive to the bar.

Many fled from the bar when gunfire erupted, some jumping through windows after patrons broke the glass with chairs. Others hid in bathrooms and an attic area. Bloodied survivors fled to a gas station and a nearby bar.
