Jack Jakubek Drowned during lifeguard tryouts

Jack Jakubek is the young man who tragically drowned following a lifeguard tryout over the weekend. It remains a mystery how 22-year-old Jack Jakubek could not come out to the surface being the strong swimmer that he was.



According to reports, Jakubek lost his life at Pilgrim Lake Saturday during a tryout for summer lifeguard jobs. It was the second year he wanted to work as a lifeguard at Nauset Beach in Orleans, like he did last summer. The SUNY Courtland graduate –where he belonged to the schools swimming and diving team –was a native of Newburgh, New York. It’s been only a few days since his graduation.

Jack was remembered by his coach and described as a passionate young man. According to his coach, Jack Jakubek cared about others, which is why lifeguarding was a perfect fit.

Jack, the former team’s captain, was close to being one of the elite swimmers in the country. According to the NY Daily News, he was planning to return to Cortland to be an assistant coach on the swim team following a stellar career in the pool.

Officials stated Jack went missing just before 9 a.m. during the town’s annual lifeguard swim test. According to the Orleans Fire-Rescue Department. He went under water while trying to swim to a buoy. Rescue crews pulled him from Pilgrim Lake at approximately 9:30 a.m. Saturday. His body was brought to shore by boat and was taken to Cape Cod Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Jack was born Jack Donald Jakubek on October 6, 1993. According to his Facebook profile, Jack did an Internship at Lime Hollow Center for Environment & Culture. Jack Jakubek is survived by his parents and two siblings; brother, Kramer Jakubek as well as sister, Anna Jaqubean.

Kramer Jakubek is a 2007 graduate from Monroe Woodbury High School in Central Valley, New York and studied Clinical Health Studies at Ithaca College. According to his LinkedIn, he is the Clinic Manager and Physical Therapist at Excel Orthopedic Rehabilitation. Anna Jaqubean is a nurse at Bronson Methodist Hospital and attended SUNY Binghamton.
