Her family immigrated to Canada in 1964 when her father received a scholarship offer from the University of British Columbia. After completing his PhD in 1969, they moved to South Carolina, where he became a biology professor at Voorhees College. Her mother pursued a career in education before opening a successful women’s clothing boutique, Exotica International, in West Columbia. Haley began assisting with the business at the age of 12. Later, in 1993, her family opened The Gentlemen’s Quarters, a male clothing store. Both businesses closed in 2008 when her mother retired.

Haley, who has two brothers and a sister, attended Orangeburg Preparatory Schools before graduating in 1989. She then earned a BS degree in accounting and finance from Clemson University in 1994. Throughout her life, she has been known by her middle name, Nikki, which translates to “little one” in Punjabi.

Nikki Haley Political Career

Haley began her professional journey by contributing to her family’s clothing business before taking on leadership roles in various organizations, including serving as treasurer and later president of the National Association of Women Business Owners. In 2004, she entered the political arena by challenging a 30-year incumbent Republican lawmaker in the primary for the South Carolina State House and emerged victorious.

Once in the state legislature, Haley confronted entrenched political practices in Columbia, advocating for fiscal responsibility and transparency. She pushed for tax cuts and demanded greater accountability, even as she faced backlash from party leadership who sought to sideline her by removing her from committee assignments.

Undeterred, Haley sought higher office and successfully ran for Governor of South Carolina in 2010, making history as the youngest governor in the country and the first minority female governor in America. Her tenure as governor was marked by significant economic growth and reform. Under her leadership, South Carolina became known as the “Beast of the Southeast,” with record-low unemployment rates and billions of dollars in new investment pouring into the state. Haley’s administration prioritized ethics reform, increased government transparency, and expanded school choice through charter school legislation.

Haley’s leadership was tested during times of crisis, including the tragic racially motivated murders at the Mother Emanuel Church in Charleston and the devastation caused by Hurricane Matthew. In both instances, she demonstrated strength and unity, bringing South Carolinians together in the face of adversity.

Her accomplishments did not go unnoticed, as evidenced by her decisive reelection in 2014 and her recognition by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2016.

In 2016, President Donald Trump nominated Haley to serve as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, where she continued to defend American interests, promote national security, and advocate for human rights. Her tenure in this role further elevated her profile on the national stage.

In February 2023, Haley announced her candidacy for President of the United States, positioning herself as a leading contender in the Republican primaries alongside former President Trump after the Iowa caucuses.
