Jason Thomas Mraz was born on June 23, 1977, in Mechanicsville, Virginia, where he also grew up. His paternal grandfather, originally from Austria-Hungary, migrated to the United States in 1915, bringing with him his Czech ancestry. Mraz, which translates to ‘frost’ in Czech, is Jason’s surname. His parents, Tom Mraz and June Tomes, divorced when he was just five years old, leading Jason to reside with his father while his sister stayed with their mother. His father worked as a postal worker, and his mother held a vice presidential position at a local Bank of America branch.

During his time at Lee-Davis High School, Mraz was involved in various activities, including cheerleading, choir, and drama club. He played the role of Joseph in the school production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Snoopy in a Peanuts play. During this period, he grappled with questions about his sexual orientation. After graduating in 1995, he pursued further studies at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City, aiming to build a career in musical theater.

Mraz developed an interest in guitar playing and songwriting when he began singing along to his roommates’ guitar tunes. A friend gifted him a guitar destined for disposal, and Mraz learned to play it and compose his own music. An early girlfriend played a significant role in encouraging him to express his thoughts through writing, which he found therapeutic.

After leaving New York, Mraz moved to Richmond, Virginia’s Shockoe Bottom neighborhood. There, he took on various jobs, including working as a janitor at an elementary school, and became a part of the Ashland Stage Company. Christina Carano was born Christina Marie Caranio in May 1980. Carano met Mraz thru mutual friends in 2007, around the time she own a coffee shop in Hermosa Beach, Calif., they started dating in 2011.

“The first few years of getting to know him, I was mostly an observer of his life,” Carano said in the interview. “I’d get invited to his concerts and small gatherings at his house here in Oceanside where I’d think, ‘Of all the places he could be, he chose to live in nature amongst the avocado trees.’ I also loved that he didn’t have a TV or microwave and that he was passionate about taking care of his health and our planet and how he chooses to live a life of service on and off the stage.”

The former barista added that it took several years for the stars to “finally align” (the pair started dating in 2011), but “now he’s [her] stud.”
