Becky & Michael Cerio are the proud parents of college gymnast, Samantha Cerio –until recently a member of the Auburn Gymnastics team.

Becky & Michael Cerio’s daughter has announced the end of her college gymnastics career after dislocating both legs during a floor routine for Auburn University.

The senior was competing Friday at an NCAA regional semifinal in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, when a blind landing in her floor routine went horribly wrong, ending her career as a gymnast.

She wrote on Instagram “I couldn’t be prouder of the person that gymnastics has made me to become,” “It’s taught me hard work, humility, integrity, and dedication, just to name a few. It’s given me challenges and road blocks that I would have never imagined that has tested who I am as a person. It may not have ended the way I had planned, but nothing ever goes as planned.”

Her limbs bent in directions they should not, dislocating her knees and tearing multiple ligaments. She snapped both of her legs while trying to land a handspring double front. She is due to receive surgery.

Becky and husband Michael Cerio are also the parents of Samantha’s brother, Dominick. The family is originally from Huntersville, N.C.

Samantha Cerio was the co- SEC Scholar-Athlete of the year. She is an aerospace engineering major who boasts a 3.48 grade point average and upon her upcoming graduation, she has accepted a job to work for Boeing in Seattle.

In the gym, she earned All-SEC awards in 2017 and 2018, and landed on the All-SEC freshman team in 2016. Prior to Auburn, Samantha attended South Iredell High School and was a four-time JO National Qualifier with a top 10 AA Finish. In 2015 she was a JO National Bars champion and also a two-time Region 8 level and 10 All-Around Champion.

Samantha is currently engaged to boyfriend, Trey Wood –who popped the question last November.
