Martin D. Ginsburg
Martin D. Ginsburg is the late husband of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
The 85-year-old widow is said to have fractured three ribs after falling in her office earlier this week.
Ruth is the first Jewish woman (and only the second woman) appointed to the United States Supreme Court. Born March 15, 1933; the New York native is often described as having a powerful and enduring influence on law, women’s rights, and popular culture.
Ruth graduated in 1954 from Cornell University with a B.A. in Government. She also attended Harvard Law School. She was admitted to New York Bar in 1959 and District of Columbia Bar in 1975. Bader taught at Rutgers University Law School and then at Columbia University, where she became its first female tenured professor.
In 1980 she was nominated by President Carter to United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. In 1993, she was nominated by President Clinton as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States.
Ruth Bader wedded Martin D. Ginsburg since 1954 –who at the time was also a law student.
Martin D. Ginsburg, who died nearly a decade ago, served as a professor of tax law at Georgetown University Law Center. Born June 10, 1932; the NY native was 78 when he died of cancer in 2010 at his home in Washington.
According to the NY Times, he received a Bachelor’s Degree from Cornell and eventually received a degree from Harvard Law School, specializing in tax law. After college, Ginsburg practiced law in New York and in addition to Georgetown, he was a law professor at New York University for several years as well. The two met on a blind date and were married for 56-years.
Together they shared two children; Jane C. Ginsburg and son, James Steven Ginsburg. Their daughter, Jane 63, is the Morton L. Janklow Professor of Literary and Artistic Property Law at Columbia Law School. Jane is married to George T. Spera, Jr. –and is the mother of the couple’s two children, Paul and Clara.
James Steven Ginsburg, 53, is a music producer married to Lisa Mara Brauston.
