Elly Mayday
Elly Mayday a Canadian model and advocate for body-positive, has died at age 30.
Elly is said to have died in Vancouver on March 1st –following years of fighting ovarian cancer. Mayday is said to have spent much of her last year of life in and out of the hospital. She was outspoken about her battle on social media and often shared updates on her health to her followers.
She reportedly began experiencing symptoms when she was in her early 20’s but was repeatedly sent home with painkillers. A CT scan in 2013 revealed her real diagnose, a cyst that turned out to be stage 3 ovarian cancer. She underwent a number of procedures and received chemotherapy but in 2017 her cancer returned.
Elly was born Ashley Luther on April 15, 1988 in Saskatchewan, Canada. After her cancer diagnose she became an advocate for raising awareness for the disease. She was known for encouraging others to love their bodies. She proudly showed off the cancer surgery scars on her stomach in both personal social media photos and professional shoots.
Prior to modeling she had worked as a flight attendant, but quit her job after she was offered two modeling contracts around the time she had been diagnosed. She saw modeling as the opportunity to show others that despite the disease, they are still beautiful.
She posted about the experience speaking about her surgeries, injections, and fatigue, all while showing gratitude and love for her body.
Her family confirmed her passing writing on Instagram that Ashley “dreamed of making an impact on people’s lives. She achieved this through the creation of Elly Mayday which allowed her to connect with all of you. Her constant support and love from her followers held a special place in her heart.”
It is not clear if the model was in a relationship at the time of her passing. We send our condolences.
