There is a Twitter account, @KUboobs, dedicated entirely to the boobs of the University of Kansas. The account has more than 58,000 followers and its own line of merchandise, and according to school officials it has become a problem. They have reportedly had enough of the so-called “boobment,” and they fired off a cease-and-desist order to its overseer, Ken Soap, on Tuesday.
“KU Boobs has been ordered to cease and desist by The University of Kansas by June 12, 2013,” he posted on the site soon after. “If you have ever wanted to submit a #kuboobs pic and never have, this is your last chance!” he added.
@KUboobs gets students to send pictures of themselves in low-cut KU T-shirts. After receiving the order, students have being uploading pictures with the hashtag #SaveKUboobs.
The University of Kansas revealed they had no problem with the page itself, since it is not associated with them, but felt Soap had crossed a line by selling merchandise.
“That violates KU’s Federal trademark, which the University must protect,” said associate athletic director Jim Marchiony. “We’ve asked them to stop selling that merchandise, not to shut down the Twitter account.”
It all started when student Tiffany Kent tweeted a photo of her cleavage in a Jayhawks shirt, with the hashtag #kuboobs, at the end of February 2012 when Kansas basketball team overcame a 19-point deficit to defeat Missouri. Quickly, KUboobs went viral.
“#kuboobs started when we were playing Missouri at the end of February … and I thought they needed a little extra help,” said Tiffany Kent.
Tiffany Kent said she never imagined how popular KUboobs would be. She also expressed the hope that the hashtag can be used in some way to ask for donations for breast cancer research funding.
“One of my friends tweeted me and said, ‘you should see the #kuboobs that you started.’ and I was like, ‘what are you talking about?’ All of a sudden they’re everywhere,” said Kent.
Tiffany Kent, whose Twitter handle is “mommyloveswine”, describes herself as a “wine lover, cupcake junkie, matchmaker extraordinaire, spin class novice, best mom ever, Tupac’s biggest fan and KU alum”.
