The drummer of psychedelic 1960’s band Jefferson Airplane, Joey Covington, was killed in Palm Springs Tuesday in a car accident. The 67-year-old was driving alone around 5:00 p.m. when his Honda left the road and crashed head-on into a retaining wall, according to the Desert Sun.

A nearby motel guest tried to resuscitate the musician but Covington died at the scene. Police don’t believe alcohol or drugs were involved. It was also reported that no other car was involved, and that Covington was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

The drummer’s wife, 59-year-old Lauren Taines, believes a heart attack or stroke caused him to drive off the road.
